      THC from Tomato Mould

A senior lecturer at University once told me of a novel and simple method of synthesizing THC from rotten tomatoes.  I heard him repeat the basics during a seminar on drug synthesis given by an Honours student as part of an assessment.  In other words I believe he believed it, and as a chemist he was more than simply competent.

As best I can recall: the grey/white mould from overripe tomatoes is collected in a soxhlet thimble and extracted with a soxhlet extractor using benzene (not having a fume hood at home I enquired if toluene could substitute and was told-yes, probably). Over time white crystals should appear increasing in number with cooling.  To this easily obtained extract of tomato-phyllic fungus a one-step Grignard reaction (CH3MgX) is performed, supposedly resulting in THC.  I may have inadvertently left out a step, perhaps someone has heard this before, if so, please fill in any blanks.  I'm not sure where the methyl group is added.  It may be an urban myth amongst senior staff, or he was as good at lying as he was at chemistry...
