      Is benzeneethanamine phenethylamine?

methylbenzeneethanamine is amphetamine, would that make benzeneethanamine phenethylamine, then?

Ive noticed Canadian drug laws list all the phenethylamines as benzeneethanamines. I assume they didn't do this to be deliberately obscure, so is this a case of different terms being prevalent in different countries? Is this term more prevalent in general scientific use than phenethylamine in some countries (ie, Canada) or is this just some quirk of their law code?

      That is an ambiguous name

Maybe they consulted an old chemist who can't stand the IUPAC rules. It must be quite a time since a "benzene group" is called phenyl and a ethane group ethyl. Anyway, the name methylbenzeneethanamine does not say enough to make it unmistakenably amphetamin. It doues not say anything on the possitions of the substituents. It could stand for N-methyl-PEA, 2-methyl-2-phenyl-ethylamine or even p-methyl-PEA and so on. Since law is supposed to be a formal, mashine-like system (the law is blindcool) I would expect them to give precise names (IUPAC) in the list of forbiden compounds and not something like this.

      Sigh!

If they can't use the correct IUPAC name then why don't they simply add the CAS # to avoid confusion? But I guess that would be too much to ask for.

      #CAS number

As a chemist, wouldn´t it be extremely dull to have numbers only? Not speaking of the brains one should have to remember them tongue...
