Also the book! | |||||||
There is a book that he's written (Phantoms in the Brain), which those lectures are based on in which he examines how the identity of self is constructed by looking at patients who have developed verystrange symptoms due to damage to very specific areas of the brain due to stroke etc. It's an excellent book, especially the chapers about temporal lobe epilepsy and how our brains might be "hard wired" to look for god, and the last chapter (Do Martians See Red?), where he looks at the different elements that integrate together to form what we percieve as self, how subjective experiences are analysed by the self, and what happens when one of the seamlessly integrated elements fails or goes wrong. To use a phrase from my home, the north of England, it left me gobsmacked. A bloody good book and well worth a read That is right, the Mascara Snake: Fast and bulbous |
